The Book "Dragonsong", by Anne McCaffrey is the story of a girl named Menolly, who has a passion for music and creates tunes. Menolly is forbidden by her father to create and sing her own tunes because she is a girl and traditionally, girls are not musicians, or "Harpers". She feels miserable with her life and so she runs away to live in a cave. She has many intriguing experiences with creatures called fire lizards (smaller cousins of dragons).

This story takes place on the planet Pern, where deadly spores called "thread" fall from another planet and devour almost everything everywhere they land! Certain men, called Dragonmen, partner with dragons that belch fire which chars the threat to ashes in midair, keeping Pern free of the horrible thread.

The writer chose a great title for a great book. She develops her characters very well and I like how she writes about females with positive female qualities. The place where this story takes place is interesting and there is never a dull moment on Pern.

I like stories about archetypes and mythical creatures, and this book will be great for you to read if you like these things too.

"Dragonsong" is the first story in the Harper Hall Trilogy, the second and the third are "Dragonsinger" and "Dragondrums". Anne McCaffrey has written many other books, which you can find at the library. ’ÄúDragonsong’Äù
